How to Build Your Team…Even When You Can’t Afford it!

Too often entrepreneurs buy into the romantic image that the “front man” or “front woman” of any business is a sort of Superhero that is doing all that business building on their own.

Well…when you start off in business, you may very well be the only person on the team…the quarterback, the receiver, the coach, and the manager!

However, you’re going to quickly learn that to get the kind of results you really want in your online business and build that “internet lifestyle’ where you can actually walk away from your computer (and your business) for a few days or even months and still make money…you’re going to need some help.

That’s were building an incredible team for your business comes in.

I’m the first to admit that I would not be where I’m at in my own business without my team.

Face it. The internet moves fast. That means that your business and implementation of your great ideas has to move fast too. And you can’t move that fast all by yourself!

Even if you are technically capable of doing every task in your business…you shouldn’t. It just takes too darn long!

So, do you need a team? Yes!

How to Build Your Team:

Leveraging the Time, Talents and Energy of Others

Who should you hire first?

If you’re creating videos, or want to create videos, for your business you may think that hiring a camera person is the best first person to add to your team.

And while you may add a video person to your team at some point, I don’t really recommend that you start there.

The first person that I hired was a VA, or virtual assistant, to handle all the administrative type tasks in my business. You know, the things that you either avoid doing because you dread doing them; or things that you should be doing but run out of time or energy before your day ends.

This first outsourcer for your business will be a sort of right-hand man or woman. It may take a couple of tries but I guarantee that once you find the right person your energy will increase, you’ll become more productive, and you’ll be able to accomplish more of the right stuff to build your online business!

How Do I Decide What Jobs to Hand Over to My Team?

I really encourage you to take a look at your own strengths and weaknesses, or challenges.

Yes…we all have them!

There are several online assessments that you can take in order to discover more about…YOU. My favorite is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator Test. It helps you define those burning questions:

  • Who am I?
  • What makes me tick?
  • Where do I thrive?
  • What drains me?

Now, here is the warning. You’re not taking these online assessments to find out what you’re NOT good at so that you can go out and learn how to be better at it.

The purpose of the assessment is to discover what you are naturally good at; the kinds of things that energize you versus the stuff that drains you.

The goal is to work within the areas that ENERGIZE you as much as possible. You can build your team to handle the things that naturally drain you.

Yes…the other draining “stuff” may be important for your business; however if you can find a talented individual to do them for you…that’s GOLD!

Because…it frees you up to stay in your “genius zone” which is usually where your business building activities originate and flourish.

Awesome video as always. Because of this video I just put up an ad on Craigslist to hire an admin and another ad to be my video editor.

I’ve been doing a lot of the work solo now and all I’ve got to say about it is that it sucks. I feel like a lot of my focus and energy has been all over the place because of the amount of work I’ve chosen to take on.

The idea of delegating and having others do the work for me sounds a lot better since it will give me the time freedom to focus on other things.
