The Power of “Because” to Get Anyone to Do Anything!
The Power of Because…
This is going to be a short yet very valuable post. Imagine one little word that can help persuade anyone to do anything. It’s this one little word alone that will get anyone to acquiesce to your every command. This can mean more subscribers, more customers, even more joint-venture partners…
As you have probably guessed by the title of this post, this little word is “because.” Humans are hardwired to need a justification for every command they are given. I think human history has proved that we are a culture that is always asking “why?!” It’s your job to tell them why. The good news is that your reason why doesn’t have to be that compelling for this strategy to work! Check out this fun little study below…
Social Psychologist Ellen Langer performed an experiment where she asked to cut in line in
front of a bunch of people to use a copy machine. She tested three different ways of asking, and recorded the results:
1. Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?
60% said OK.
2. Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I’m in a rush?
94% said OK.
Giving a “reason why” of because I’m in a rush boosted the effectiveness of the request signifigantly.
But it gets better..
3. Excuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine because I have to make some copies?
93% said OK.
The word “because” is so powerful that it didn’t really seem to matter what is the “reason why”.
The Application of “Because”
Interesting stuff right? Well, let’s see how you can immediately put this in action in your marketing…
1. Getting Subscribers to Opt-In
I usually do Video Squeeze Pages and when I make my call to action, I always remember to add a little “because.”
Please swipe this:
“To get instant access to my Business Starter Kit, simply type in your email in the box on your right and press submit so I know where to send your goodies!”
Note: I did not use the word “because” but I still answered the question WHY!
2. Having a Sale!
A lot of money can be made when you have a special discounted sale for your products and services. One of the biggest problems I see is when marketers forget to demonstrate a reason WHY they are having a sale (“just because I felt like it” isn’t enough). You can get really fun and creative with this…Perhaps you are saving up for a new car/home/vacation/etc. Perhaps it’s
a special event like your birthday, you just had a baby, or your son or daughter is leaving for college. Make your WHY compelling,
fun and interesting and people will be more eager to take action during your sale!
3. Making a Sale
When you sell online, a big hurdle is being able to overcome the many objections of your prospects. A lot of the objections are handled simply by answering WHY to their questions.
a. Why Should I pay this much for this information?
Because it cost me thousands of dollars and years of experience to figure it out myself and it can double, even
triple your income…
b. Why Should I buy this from you?
Because I have over 15 years of experience and I am awesome…
Why Should I buy right now?
c. Take action now because there is limited seating and we close the doors tomorrow at midnight….
One Last Important Thing…
Are you starting to see a simple way you can use “because” in your marketing? Try it in your next email newsletter or sales page copy! Give a command and then give a justification for that command. Now, one last thing…

James, you’re becoming addictive – and I don’t say this lightly (or ever, in fact!).
Reading blogs is not my first choice of how to spend my time *because* what I love is working on my own biz.
You simply have compelling copy and something to say, and you do it in a way that engages me.
I love this *because* post. I’m a gonna’ use it right away!
Wishing you continued creative flow,

This was the best blog post I’ve read all week, including my own! Probably because it’s so brilliantly simple and has the study and your results to prove it. Thanks!
I was looking for this kind of word to use it in my life and I have find it .
Thank you
I love this tip because of the fun and creative unlimited possibilities. My “because” for my next sale is going to be “Because my husband and I want to Go Back to Machu Picchu after 36 years.” Brilliant!
Thanks James.
I have just been receiving your stuff lately, but can see that what you offer may help me to get some proper sales copy written and my product out there BECAUSE…you make it sound so simple.
I am grateful and appreciate your free content BECAUSE…it gives me hope that I can help more folks with a few (okay maybe more than a few) tweeks here and there.
Great tips, I coudnt tweet it because, the was no tweet button… I’m on mobile maybe that’s why?
Thank you for the great advice. I do have actual products that I sell and I love the idea of giving a reason for a sale. I will be incorporating “because” into my copy.
I am a fan for life and I really appreciate receiving your posts. Thanks so much!
